音楽メディアの未来を考える[前編]
アナログ・レコードは生き残るか？
技術の進歩とともに、レコーディングからリスニング形態に至るまで激動の時代を私たちは迎えている。特にリスナーにとっては、CDで音楽を聴く行為が薄れ、新たな局面が浮き彫りになっている。1つは、音楽データをダウンロードで購入するという形態。以前はMP3などの圧縮音源ばかりであったが、ここ数年で16ビット／44.1kHzよりもハイクオリティな“ハイレゾ音源”のダウンロード販売も増えている。他方注目したいのが、アナログ・レコード。ポピュラー・ミュージック黎明期を支えた長寿メディアだが、独特な音質に加えて“モノ”としての価値の高さから、レコードをリリースするアーティストは意外に多い。アメリカでは今年度のレコード売り上げが前年比25％増になると言われているほどだ。この対照的な音楽のリリース形態を2カ月にわたってお送りするのが本企画。その前編として、まずアナログ・レコードに着目。ダウンロード音源に比べると圧倒的に不便であり、制作費がかさばる故に採算の取りにくいメディアだが、今レコードでリリースするアーティストたちはどのように考えているのだろうか？ レコードの基礎知識、アーティスト・インタビュー、レコード音質検証コーナーを通して多角的に考えていく。

まつきあゆむが牛尾憲輔（agraph）に
MIDIの使い方を教えてもらう
まつきあゆむというアーティストをご存じでしょうか？ 自身の楽曲をネット直販という方法で販売し、Twitterなどで大きな話題を呼んだシンガー・ソングライターです。彼はギターをはじめほとんどの楽器を自分で演奏＆DAWに録音し、しかる後に波形編集をバキバキに行って最終的な曲へ構築するという、きわめて現代的な制作方法を行っていますが、しかし、ある日、Twitterでこんなことをつぶやいてました。“MIDI分からん……”。あんなにDAWを使いこなしているように見えるまつきでさえ、MIDIって難しく思えるものなんだ、ということに編集部は驚き、お節介ながら彼にMIDIの基礎をたたきこむ！という企画を思い付きました。で、先生をだれにしようかな……と考えたんですが、いました、適任者が。電気グルーヴのレコーディングやライブのサポート、そしてagraph名義でアーティスト活動も精力的に行う牛尾憲輔です。弊誌がDommuneで不定期に行っている番組「うちこみ！」でも、実に的確に打ち込みについて説明してくれる彼なら、必ずやまつきをMIDI使いにしてくれることでしょう。実は2人は同い年なので、先生と生徒というよりは友達同士のタメトークという雰囲気ではありますが、それがかえって小難しくなりがちなMIDIというテーマを分かりやすいものにしてくれているはず。ということで、MIDI初心者の皆さん！ これを読めば絶対アナタもMIDIを使えるようになりますよ～。

宅録用オーディオI/Oの音質は
上位機と普及機でどれくらい違うのか？
DAWによる音楽制作で、音質を大きく左右する存在のオーディオ・インターフェースだが、宅録ユースに適したシリーズだけを見ても、メーカーがそれぞれに趣向を凝らした製品をラインナップされている。それらを大きくカテゴリー分けすると、2イン／2アウトの小型機、8つ以上の入出力を持った上位機、そしてその中間のいわゆる売れ筋の普及機という3つになるだろう。そして宅録ユーザーがオーディオ・インターフェースを新調しようと思うときに悩ましいのが、上位機か普及機、どちらを選んだらいいかだ。もちろん、チャンネル数や機能では上位機に軍配が上がるだろうが、予算的に普及機の価格は魅力的。だとすると、気になるのは音質の面で上位機と普及機にどれくらいの差があるかだ。今回は、発売されたばかりのROLAND Quad-Capture、MOTU Audio Express、そして昨年Pro Tools 9と同時期に発売され大いに話題となったAVID Pro Tools MBoxという3つのオーディオ・インターフェースを、それぞれの上位機と比較試聴してみることにした。

海外のトップ・エンジニアに自身の手掛けたヒット曲のミックス手法を直接解説してもらう本連載。今回登場していただくのは、現在26歳の若きエンジニア、ジョーダン・ヤング。学生時代、地元であるカナダのトロントでDJ活動を行っていたヤングは、将来の道をエンジニアと決め2005年にニューヨークのスタジオで働き始めたという。そこで経験したラッパーとの仕事が契機となり、R＆B／ヒップホップ界との交流を深めていったそうだが、昨年彼をネクスト・レベルに引き上げるオファーが舞い込んできた。それは、1年間のオフから返り咲くディーバ、ビヨンセのニュー・アルバムを録音しないかというビッグな話だったのだ！ 彼が手掛けることになったその作品は『4』と銘打たれ、今夏に発売。新進エンジニアの生んだ音とはいかなるものなのか？ 早速迫っていこう。

クレイグ・ストリート
～マデリン・ペルー『スタンディング・オン・ザ・ルーフトップ』
ボブ・ディランやロバート・ジョンソンを敬愛し、ブルースを根に持つ女性シンガー・ソングライター、マデリン・ペルー。ブルージィなサウンドにジャズの歌唱スタイルを織り交ぜたしなやかな歌声は“21世紀のビリー・ホリデイ”とも評され、大きな期待と注目を集めている。その彼女の最新作『スタンディング・オン・ザ・ルーフトップ』は、名匠クレイグ・ストリートを迎えて制作されている。ノラ・ジョーンズやカサンドラ・ウィルソンなどの個性派シンガーを多く手がけるストリートは、本作でも持ち前の手腕を発揮。一癖持つ一流奏者たちが奏でるミニマムなサウンドの中で、独自の響きを持つマデリンの歌を見事にとらえたプロダクションは、マデリンが掲げる“最小限の表現”を体現した力作となっている。アーティストと密接にコミュニケーションを取り、彼らが内に秘めるポテンシャルを解放していくという、クレイグ・ストリートのならではプロデュース・ワークの詳細を検証していこう。

ジ・オーブ
「リトル・フルッフィ・クラウズ」
1980年代末のレイブ・カルチャーから派生したチル・アウト・ミュージック。その先駆け一端を担ったのがアレックス・パターソン率いる、ジ・オーブである。彼らの代表曲である「リトル・フルッフィ・クラウズ」は、サンプリングを主体にした実験的なサウンドで、彼ら独自のジャンルでもある“アンビエント・ハウス”を定義づけ、チル・アウト・ミュージックの代表曲として知られる。リッキー・リー・ジョーンズの語りやパット・メセニーのギター・フレーズ、さらには映画音楽のハーモニカなど、膨大なサンプルネタをコラージュして構成した点でも、同曲は革新的であり、当時に引用アーティストから著作権絡みの訴訟を受けるという、いわく付きの曲でもあった。それもあり、アレックス・パターソンはこれまで同曲について多くを語らなかったが、近年では再びこの曲をプレイするようになった。ここでは制作過程から訴訟まで、その一部始終を自身に語ってもらった。

2. Leaking Iron Teapot: If an antique iron teapot is leaking, please take clear photos of the leaking area and provide them.
