ＵＳアルバムチャート　１位

●１９７１年１月から７月４日まで、サンフランシスコのコロンビアスタジオで録音され、九月にリリースされました。アルバムタイトルは"Santana"『サンタナ』と、６９年のデビューアルバムと同じだったので、区別するために『III』とか『サンタナ　III』と呼ばれています。

●デビュー以来のサンタナの最高峰であると言われていますが、この後、サンタナはジャズ・フュージョンの方向を目指して成功します。とても珍しいことですが、２０１６年に、このメンバーで「再結成」され、もしも、このメンバーで続けていたらというコンセプトで、現代の名盤『サンタナIV』（←出品中です。クリックしてください）が生まれました。このサンタナIIIは二度目の全米チャート１位に輝きましたが、その後、高く評価されたアルバムや大ヒット曲も生まれたものの、次に１位になったアルバムは９９年の"Supernatural"『スーパーナチュラル』ということで、ギネスのチャート１位のアルバムの一番長いギャップを獲得しました。現在は、この記録の保持者はポールマッカートニーになっています。

●一曲目の『バトゥーカ』は、作者の一人のグレッグ・ローリーはバーンスタインの曲に刺激されて生まれた曲だと語ったと、リマスターバージョンのライナーノーツに書かれています。『天の守護神』で、『僕のリズムを聞いとくれ』をカバーして成功しましたが、このアルバムでは同じティト・プエンテの『情熱のルンバ』をカバーしました。初期を知るファンに長く深く愛される名作です。このリマスター盤には、ボーナストラックとして７１年７月４日のフィルモア・ウェストでのライブが３曲収録されていますが、１７歳という若さで超絶技巧の素晴らしいギターを聴かせたニールショーンとサンタナの二人のギターをライブで楽しむことができます。
