歴史

沿革

鍋谷淳一 JUNICHI NABETANI
1966年、東京都生まれ。1949年に大田区で創業した「鍋谷グラス工芸社」の3代目として、4代目・鍋谷海斗氏とともに江戸切子と向き合う。2009年、伝統工芸士に認定。2013年には「江戸切子新作展」にて「経済産業省商務情報政策局長賞」を受賞する。

いろはを学び、腕をつけ、実感
——ご家業が江戸切子の工房ですが、鍋谷さんが職人になるまでのお話から聞かせてください。

子どもの頃、友だちが江戸切子を知らなかったんですよ。それに、僕が子どもの頃は今ほど道具も進化していなかったから、作業は全て重労働です。毎日クタクタになるまで仕事する父を見ながら「これは大変だ」とも感じていたし、江戸切子は今後、産業として成り立っていないんじゃないかと思っていたんです。
23歳で社会人になったんですが、当時の僕は、やりがいは仕事がくれるもんだとばかり思っていました。同時に、やりがいがない仕事はしたくないとも思っていて。その後、やりがいは仕事がくれるものじゃない。自分で感じるものだと分かるんですけれど。江戸切子はやりがいがないって、勝手に判断していたんです。
だから、学校を卒業したあとはコンピューター関係の仕事につきました。時代として盛り上がっていく予感がしたし、憧れもあって。でも、入ったものの、希望の部署に入れなくって。ちょうど1年で辞めたんですが、同時に、自分のやりたいこともなくなってしまいました。
ただ、何もしないでブラブラしてるわけにもいきません。その時に父から「お前、江戸切子はやるのか？ やらないのなら、自分の代で潰すのは簡単だから」と言われたんです。どうせ潰すんなら一回関わってみようと、25歳で江戸切子の世界に入りました。
